The Russian queer community were under siege. Their events were being targeted with hate, and promoting them was illegal under Russia's gay propaganda laws.
As an act of solidarity, we invited Russia's queer community to live stream the Melbourne Queer Film Festival's opening night via Periscope, in the safety and comfort of their own home. To protest against Russia's gay propaganda laws, we erected billboards in Melbourne with messaging in Russian, to let Russia's queer community know about the live stream. The billboards were widely shared to Russian audiences via social media. Our Russian host brought glamour of the event, ensuring our audience on the other side of the world felt included.
